Why didn’t Maya leave?
She had a car.
The front door was not locked.

At 10:15, when Mom arrived with groceries, Maya thought she could send her away.
Then guests started arriving almost immediately.
Mom told them Maya had changed her mind.
Maya became trapped socially before physically.
She did not want to scream at twenty older guests in front of Chloe.
Then Mom put Chloe on the stool.
Maya stayed near her.
Then the phone went up on the cabinet.
Then the sink filled.
Each step made the next one slightly harder.
Could Maya have walked through the dining room and out the front door with Chloe?
Yes.

“I kept thinking if I got through another ten minutes, everyone would eat and leave.”
