I immediately bought a replacement.
Maya said:
“Why?”
“Security.”
“Against what?”
“Building staff.”
She looked at me.
I heard myself.
“Okay. Maybe I’m overreacting.”
We talked.
Eventually replaced it with a doorbell camera and no interior camera.
The kitchen unit came down.
For two years, I had liked knowing it was there.
Proof.
Protection.
Maya had started to hate feeling recorded in her own home.
That mattered more.
I unscrewed the camera from above the storage cabinet.
There was a lighter square of paint behind it.
Chloe said:
“Ugly.”
“Thank you.”
We repainted.
