Chapter 16 - ALEX, YOU ALWAYS EXPLAIN HERMaya and I started counseling.
Not because our marriage was ending.
Because I had participated in the conditions that allowed Mom inside our life too easily.
At the second session, Maya said:
“Alex always explains her.”
I knew that sentence.
Different families.
Same mistake.
“What do you mean?” the therapist asked.
Maya looked at me.
“When Evelyn insults me, Alex tells me why she’s stressed.”
I said:
“That isn’t—”
The therapist lifted one finger.
Let her finish.
“When she walks into our condo without permission, he says she grew up in a family where everyone had keys.”
True.
“When she criticizes Chloe’s food, he says she worries about health.”
True.
“When she tells guests I don’t work enough, he says his mom equates careers with status.”
Also true.
Maya continued:
“He can explain anything she does. Which means I’m always the person left holding the effect.”
I sat there.
No defense worked.
