Chapter 8 - WHY EVELYN NEEDED OUR CONDOMom’s version began with architecture.

Her charity group—the Queen City Cultural Circle—hosted rotating luncheons.

Twenty to twenty-five people.

Once a month.

Mom had volunteered to host August.

Her own condo building had scheduled elevator renovation.

Then a water leak damaged the residents’ dining room.

She needed another venue.

Our condo had:

City view.

Dining table for twelve expandable to twenty.

Open kitchen.

Parking validation through my corporate account.

Perfect.

Mom asked Maya five weeks earlier.

Maya said no.

Not maybe.

No.

Why?

Because Chloe’s preschool break meant she would be home.

Because Maya was finishing a design project.

Because twenty guests in our condo were twenty too many.

Mom asked me separately.

I said:

“Talk to Maya.”

That sounded neutral.

It wasn’t.

Maya had already answered.

I knew that.

Mom heard:

Keep trying.

Two weeks later, she told the Cultural Circle the lunch would be at:

“My son’s place downtown.”

Maya found out through Carol.

She called me furious.

I finally told Mom:

“You need another venue.”

Mom said:

“I already invited everyone.”

I answered:

“Then uninvolve them.”

She accused Maya of embarrassing her.

The lunch should have died there.

Then Maya injured her hands.

Any remotely reasonable person would have canceled.

Mom instead called it an opportunity.
