Not custody.
Grandparent visitation.
Her attorney argued she had a significant preexisting relationship and that Alex was abruptly cutting her off after a family dispute.
Our state’s law did not give grandparents automatic rights simply because they wanted them.
Family structure and constitutional parental rights mattered.
The petition was weak.
Still upsetting.
Mom’s filing said:
“Alex is acting under Maya’s coercive influence.”
I laughed when I read it.
Then stopped.
Because that was Mom’s worldview.
Someone always controlled someone.
If I disagreed with her, Maya controlled me.
If Maya refused, she controlled the family.
If Chloe cried, Maya had taught her.
Mom struggled to imagine other people could simply disagree.
That was not a diagnosis.
Just a pattern.
The visitation request was eventually dismissed without the sweeping precedent relatives imagined.
