She asked about her.
That complicated everything.
“Is Grandma bad?”
We did not answer yes.
We said:
“Grandma made unsafe choices.”
“Does she love me?”
“Yes.”
That was true as far as we understood it.
“Then why did she make me wash dishes?”
Because love does not automatically create safe behavior.
That sentence was too complicated for five.
So Maya said:
“Sometimes adults care about you and still do something wrong. That’s why grown-ups need rules too.”
Chloe accepted that more easily.
At six, she asked:
“Does Grandma have rules now?”
