Chapter 19 - THE PART I PLAYEDThe main truth included me.

Not as accomplice.
I did not know about the lunch proceeding.
I did not tell Mom to force anyone to work.
I did not know she would take Maya’s phone.
Still:
I had given Mom access.
I had repeatedly minimized earlier intrusions.
I knew Maya had said no to the party.
When Mom asked me separately, I told her:
“Talk to Maya.”
As if Maya’s first answer had expired.
When Maya injured her hands and said Mom would help, I accepted the arrangement despite knowing their relationship was strained.
Why?
Because my meeting mattered to me.
Because returning early was inconvenient.
Because I trusted the version of my mother I wanted to have.
Those were not crimes.
They were marital failures.

Maya did not need me to accept guilt for Evelyn’s actions.
She needed me to stop pretending my passivity had been neutral.
