Chapter 5 - WHAT THE CAMERA ACTUALLY RECORDEDThe kitchen camera recorded video only.
No audio.
That disappointed police less than I expected.
“Video can still tell us a lot,” Officer Hannah Price said.
The first clip started at 10:11.
Mom entering through the kitchen hallway with two large grocery bags.
Maya followed.
Bandaged hands visible.
Chloe nearby.
Mom pointed toward the dining room.
Maya shook her head.
Mom pointed again.
No sound.
Then another clip.
10:24.
Guests beginning to arrive.
Maya standing near the island.
Mom handing her serving utensils.
Maya visibly refusing.
Mom setting them down in front of her anyway.
10:46.
Chloe on the stool.
Rinsing plastic cups.
Mom behind her.
Maya enters.
Points at Chloe.
Then toward the floor.
Apparently telling her to get down.
Mom steps between them.
11:03.
The large stockpot.
Mom carries it from the stove.
Steam visible.
Maya immediately backs away from the sink.
Mom sets the pot beside it.
Then points at the dirty dishes.
Maya raises both bandaged hands.
Clear gesture.
Mom takes one of Maya’s wrists.
Not violently enough to throw her.
Still deliberate.
Guides her back toward the sink.
Maya pulls away.
11:09.
Maya reaches for her phone.
Mom takes it from the counter first.
Places it on top of the tall storage cabinet.
Out of easy reach.
That image made me nauseous.
11:31.
Maya washing dishes.
Bandages wet.
Mom dining with guests.
Chloe on stool drying cups.
12:02.
Maya reaches for a plate.
Winces.
Mom appears.
Points toward the sink.
Then toward the dining room.
12:18.
Chloe tries to leave the stool.
Mom moves it back with her foot.
Not violently.
Still.
Maya intervenes.
12:31.
The stockpot returns.
This was the clip I almost played in front of everyone.
Mom pours steaming water from the pot into one side of the sink.
Maya jerks backward.
Chloe is on the other side of the counter, not directly exposed to the pour.
Important.
Mom points toward the dishes.
Maya says something.
No audio.
Mom leans closer.
Then reaches for Maya’s right bandaged hand.
The clip ends.
Motion gap.
Next clip begins twenty-eight seconds later.
Maya washing again.
That was the hidden portion.
No graphic scalding.
No hand being submerged into boiling water.
No attempted murder.
Something more mundane and cruel.
Pressure.
