Chapter 25 - ONE YEAR LATERAt Chloe’s sixth birthday, we invited fourteen people.

Not twenty.
No Evelyn.
Chloe chose tacos.
Paper plates.
A cake shaped like a yellow cat.
At one point I walked into the kitchen.
Maya was washing a serving spoon.
Her hands had healed.
Thin scars.
No functional impairment.
Chloe stood beside her on the same small wooden stool.
My body reacted before thought.
“Chloe.”
She looked.
“What?”
I stared at the stool.
Then Maya understood.
“She asked to help frost cupcakes.”
Chloe held up a spatula covered in blue icing.
“Dad, relax.”
Six years old and already diagnosing me.
I laughed.
“Okay.”
The stool stayed.
The sink was warm.
No giant stockpot.
No command.
No withheld lunch.
Same objects.
May you like
Different relationship.
That was recovery more than removing every reminder.
