“I’m sorry things got out of hand.”

Second:
“I’m sorry Maya felt pressured.”
Worse.
Then therapy apparently did something.
Eleven months after the lunch, she wrote separate letters.
Maya’s:
You told me not to hold the luncheon in your home. I did it anyway.
Good start.
When your hands were injured, I decided I had authority to judge whether your medical restrictions were reasonable. I did not.
Better.
I used Chloe’s desire to please adults and your reluctance to embarrass guests to keep both of you participating after you wanted to stop.
There.
I took your phone because I knew Alex would end the party if you reached him.
No excuse.
Maya read that sentence twice.
Then put the letter down.
She did not answer immediately.
Her eventual reply:
I believe you understand more than you did. That does not restore access to my home or Chloe.
Mom responded:
May you like
Understood.
For the first time, she did not negotiate.
