Chapter 1 - Something Inside the CastThe rain struck the clinic windows so hard that Marcus Hale could barely hear the cartoons playing in Pediatric Exam Room 4.

Six-year-old Lily sat on the examination table with both legs trapped inside hot pink casts. The fiberglass began at her toes and ended above her knees, forcing her small body into a stiff, helpless position.

Her guardian, David Cross, stood close enough to block the door.

Marcus rolled his stool toward the table and lifted the cast saw.

Lily recoiled so violently that her back struck the wall.

“I’m not going to hurt you,” Marcus said.

David kicked the stool forward.

“Stop talking and cut it off.”

Marcus steadied himself.

He had treated frightened children for twelve years. Some cried at the sound of the saw. Others screamed before it touched the cast. But Lily was not watching the machine.

She was watching David’s hands.

Marcus activated the blade and began cutting a careful line through the fiberglass. Lily squeezed her eyes shut. Silent tears slid down her cheeks.

Halfway down the left cast, the saw struck something hard.

The handle jerked violently.

Marcus shut it off.

David’s irritation disappeared.

Raw panic replaced it.

His right hand moved beneath his jacket.

Marcus grabbed the metal spreaders and forced the cut apart.

A sickening smell rose from inside.

Beneath the cast was a jagged piece of rusty industrial metal wrapped in stained hospital plastic. It had been pressed against the bruised skin beside Lily’s knee.

Behind it lay a folded note.

Lily opened her eyes.

“Please… read the note.”

David lunged.

Marcus threw himself between David and the examination table, then slammed the panic button beneath the counter.

“Step away from the child.”

A red emergency light flashed above the door.

Nurse Emily Carter rushed in with Aaron Brooks, the clinic’s security officer. David stopped inches from Marcus, his hand still hidden beneath his jacket.

Emily saw the split cast.

“Do not touch anything. This is evidence.”

She raised the clinic’s medical camera and photographed the metal, plastic, note, bruising, and every visible edge of the cast before anyone moved them.

Aaron positioned himself between David and the hallway.

“Sir, take your hand out slowly.”

David glared at Marcus.

“You have no idea what you’re interfering with.”

Marcus did not answer.

Lily had wrapped both hands around the sleeve of his white coat.

Emily used sterile forceps to lift the folded note without disturbing the metal.

The writing was uneven, part childlike printing and part hurried adult script.

Marcus read the first sentence silently.

Then he read it again.

My name is Lily Bennett. David Cross is not my father. My mother is alive. He put the metal inside my leg so no one would find it.

Below that, in smaller writing, were six words:

Do not send me home with him.

David moved toward the door.

Aaron blocked him.

“This is kidnapping,” David snapped. “I brought her here for medical treatment, and you’re holding us without cause.”

Marcus looked at the intake form clipped beside the medical cart.

David Cross was listed as Lily’s biological father.

The emergency contact was blank.

The home address belonged to an apartment complex that had been demolished three years earlier.

A final line had been written beneath the note’s fold.

The handwriting was adult and steadier than the rest.

Ask Marcus Hale what happened at Riverton Steel.

Marcus’s blood turned cold.

Riverton Steel was where his younger sister had died eleven years earlier.

No one inside this room should have known that.

👉 The cast concealed evidence of a crime, but the final message connected Lily’s terror to the tragedy that had destroyed Marcus’s own family.
