Rain flooded the marble steps.
The public entrance was locked.
A clerk claimed the building had closed due to weather, yet lights glowed inside Judge Vane’s private courtroom.
Nora presented the emergency protection order from a neighboring jurisdiction and forced entry through the sheriff’s office.
Inside, Claire stood beside David’s attorney.
Judge Russell Vane sat behind the bench.
David occupied the witness chair.
No independent child advocate was present.
No attorney represented Sarah.
The proceeding was being conducted under seal.
Russell looked at Nora with cold irritation.
“You are interrupting a family-protection hearing.”
“You are presiding over your granddaughter’s custody while your daughter is the petitioner.”
“My relationship has been disclosed.”
“To whom?”
“The appropriate authority.”
Claire approached Sarah.
“You should have accepted protection when Daniel offered it.”
“You turned protection into imprisonment.”
“You kept Lily beside industrial evidence.”
“David put it in her cast.”
“Because you stole it.”
“Because your company killed eight people.”
Russell struck the bench.
“This hearing concerns a child, not an industrial dispute.”
Marcus placed Emily’s sealed medical report on the evidence table.
“They became the same dispute when a man used the child’s body to transport physical evidence.”
Emily submitted the original photographs and cast-removal recording. The footage showed David’s panic, his lunge toward the metal, Lily’s plea, and Marcus activating the alarm.
The judge watched without expression.
David’s attorney argued that the video lacked context.
Then Lily’s recorded statement played.
David put it inside. Mommy put the note behind it. He said doctors would never look.
Russell paused the playback.
“A frightened child may repeat suggestions.”
Marcus felt anger rise.
“This child described details before anyone questioned her.”
Claire opened Sarah’s supposed confession.
It stated that Sarah fractured Lily’s legs intentionally to hide the Riverton evidence.
Sarah denied every word.
A handwriting analyst had not reviewed it.
The only witness to the signature was Dr. Julian Pierce.
Pierce was now in police custody.
Nora called the clinic.
Pierce agreed to speak after learning Claire intended to blame Sarah alone.
His live testimony filled the courtroom.
“David caused the second fracture when Lily tried to run. I reset the cast. Sarah did not injure her.”
Claire’s face hardened.
“Why should anyone trust you?” the judge asked.
“They shouldn’t. That’s why the room camera matters.”
Pierce revealed that he secretly recorded casting procedures to protect himself from David.
The footage remained on a private server.
Police accessed it.
The video showed David restraining Lily while Pierce reopened the left cast. The metal fragment was already in David’s hand.
Sarah entered later under guard.
When David left to answer a call, she pushed the folded note and memory card into a gap behind the fragment.
She kissed Lily’s forehead.
Then David returned and forced Sarah from the room.
The forged confession collapsed.
Claire’s guardianship claim weakened.
Russell still refused to dismiss it.
He argued that Sarah’s prolonged involvement with Grayhaven raised questions about her ability to protect Lily.
Sarah stood.
“I stayed because your daughter threatened to erase my child’s identity.”
Claire answered.
“I kept Lily alive after Daniel died.”
“You kept her available.”
The courtroom doors opened.
Caroline Hale entered carrying Anna’s original laptop.
State investigators had verified its contents.
One file showed Claire meeting with Judge Vane before the Riverton civil claims were dismissed. Another showed Daniel Voss accusing his sister and father of protecting Halcyon.
The final audio recording came from the night Daniel died.
His voice said:
“Claire, if anything happens to me, Sarah gets full custody. Father gets nothing.”
A second voice answered.
Judge Vane.
“You are confusing blood with ownership.”
Russell rose from the bench.
“This recording is fabricated.”
Caroline placed the original device beside the evidence report.
The judge’s authority began collapsing in real time.
But before Nora could request his removal, every courtroom door locked.
Claire held a small control beneath the table.
“I told you Grayhaven was designed because courts could not be trusted,” she said. “I never said this court was different.”
A wall panel opened behind the judge’s bench.
It revealed a private elevator.
Claire moved toward it with Lily’s birth certificate and the original Riverton custody files.
David followed.
Russell remained frozen between protecting himself and protecting his daughter.
Sarah ran toward them.
