Chapter 4 - The Second Pink CastMarcus did not wait for the argument to continue.

“This is now a medical emergency.”
He guided everyone except Emily, Nora, and the forensic technician out of the immediate work area. Aaron moved David into the hallway under police supervision.
The ticking accelerated.
Lily stared at her right leg.
“Is it going to hurt?”
“No,” Marcus said. “I’m getting it off.”
He positioned the cast saw along the outer edge, using the X-ray to avoid the healing fracture. Emily held Lily’s hand while Nora recorded the removal.
The blade cut through the fiberglass.
Nothing struck it.
Marcus opened the shell with the spreaders.
A narrow black device had been embedded between layers of padding near Lily’s ankle. It was no larger than a car key.
The forensic technician examined it without touching.
“It isn’t explosive.”
The room exhaled.
“What is it?” Emily asked.
“A proximity alarm and tracker.”
The device had begun ticking because it lost contact with David’s transmitter.
It was designed to alert someone if Lily moved beyond a specific range.
Marcus looked toward the hallway.
David had not merely controlled Lily through fear.
He had monitored whether she left him.
Beneath the tracker was a thin memory card wrapped in clear tape.
Lily’s eyes widened.
“Mommy’s little picture.”
“Your mother put this there too?”
“She said it remembers things.”
The card was preserved and transferred to a hospital computer disconnected from the network.
A video opened.
Sarah Bennett appeared on-screen.
She was thinner than in the old news photographs. A bruise darkened one side of her face. Behind her stood a concrete wall and a red industrial pipe.
“If Marcus Hale is seeing this,” she said, “then Lily reached the clinic, and David failed to control the cast removal.”
Marcus felt the room narrow around him.
Sarah continued.
“The Riverton collapse was not an accident. David approved counterfeit support bolts after Meridian Industrial received payment from Halcyon Development. I copied the invoices and took fragment 442B from the debris before it disappeared.”
Nora paused the video.
“Why hide it in a child’s cast?”
They resumed.
“David found the fragment three months ago. He planned to destroy it after moving Lily and me across state lines. He hid it inside her cast to cross a private security checkpoint because children’s medical devices were exempt from inspection.”
Marcus closed his eyes briefly.
David had pressed jagged industrial evidence against a child’s injured leg because he considered her body a convenient container.
Sarah’s voice shook.
“I pushed the note and memory card inside while he argued with Dr. Pierce. I could not remove the metal without him noticing.”
Silver glasses.
Lily’s “other doctor” was Dr. Julian Pierce, owner of a private orthopedic center twenty miles away.
The video timestamp was twelve days old.
Sarah was alive less than two weeks earlier.
“If I am not with Lily when this is found, David moved me to Grayhaven. The rain room is beneath the old rehabilitation wing. Do not call the facility first. Their administrator works for Halcyon.”
The recording distorted.
Sarah leaned closer.
“Marcus, Anna discovered the counterfeit shipments before the collapse. She sent me a copy of the serial list. Your sister was not simply standing in the wrong place.”
Marcus stopped breathing.
“She was targeted?” Emily whispered.
Sarah answered as though she had anticipated the question.
“Anna was scheduled to leave Section 17 at midnight. David changed the inspection window and kept her inside until the east supports failed.”
The video ended.
Marcus stared at the blank screen.
For eleven years, he had believed his sister died because a company ignored maintenance.
Sarah claimed David manipulated her schedule.
The collapse had been designed to kill a witness.
Nora opened the database for Grayhaven Rehabilitation Center.
The facility had closed five years earlier.
Its property was currently owned by a shell company.
The registered director was Dr. Julian Pierce.
Then Aaron called from the hallway.
David was gone.
During a brief power fluctuation caused by the storm, someone opened the secure service exit from the outside.
The officer assigned to David had been found unconscious but breathing.
On the floor beside him lay a printed photograph of Sarah.
Across her face, someone had written:

YOU OPENED THE WRONG CAST.
👉 Sarah’s recording identified David as part of the Riverton conspiracy, but his escape proved someone inside the clinic was still helping him.
