Chapter 11 - The Security Officer’s SonMarcus called Emily directly.

“Is Lily with you?”

“Yes. The officers are outside the room.”

“Where is Aaron?”

“He said his son was in danger.”

“Did you know he had a son?”

“No.”

The clinic’s power remained on, but its cameras and badge readers had entered maintenance mode. Someone inside the network was controlling them remotely.

Emily locked Exam Room 4 manually and moved Lily behind the medical cart.

The child heard Marcus’s voice through the phone.

“Did you find Mommy?”

“Yes.”

Lily began crying.

“Is she coming?”

“As soon as we can get back safely.”

Sarah took the phone.

“Baby, listen to me. Stay with Nurse Emily. Do not open the door for David, Claire, or anyone who says I sent them.”

“Mommy?”

“I love you.”

Before Sarah could say more, someone struck the examination-room door from the hallway.

Emily lowered the phone.

A man shouted, “Hospital maintenance. We need to inspect the alarm.”

Lily whispered, “That is the doctor with silver glasses.”

Pierce had disappeared from police supervision in the tunnel during the Riverton emergency.

His injured shoulder should have slowed him.

Someone had helped him leave.

Emily activated the panic button again.

This time, no red light appeared.

The system had been disabled.

She pushed the examination table against the door.

At Riverton, Nora ordered officers back toward the clinic while state technicians secured Anna’s vault.

Sarah wanted to go with Marcus.

“You are injured.”

“My daughter is there.”

No one tried to stop her.

Meanwhile, Aaron called Nora.

His voice shook.

“My son is alive.”

Aaron Brooks Jr. disappeared eight years earlier at age four after Aaron’s former wife entered a Grayhaven protection program. Claire told Aaron both had died in a highway accident.

A message sent that evening included a recent photograph of the boy, now twelve.

The instructions ordered Aaron to disable the clinic cameras and leave the building.

He obeyed.

“Who sent it?” Nora asked.

“Claire.”

“Where did she tell you to go?”

“An underground parking garage near the courthouse.”

Aaron reached the garage and found his son inside a locked van.

The boy was alive.

Claire had kept him under another identity.

Aaron freed him, then realized the message was timed to pull security away from Lily.

He called Nora while returning to the clinic.

Pierce forced open the examination-room door before help arrived.

Emily swung a metal IV pole toward him.

He caught it with his uninjured arm and pushed the medical cart aside.

Lily crawled beneath the table.

Pierce was not trying to take her.

He was trying to reach the preserved cast evidence stored inside the locked cabinet.

“The fragment is gone,” Emily told him.

“I need the plastic.”

The stained wrapping around the metal carried more than blood and rust.

It contained microscopic residue from the chemical used to weaken Riverton’s support components.

Pierce had helped manufacture it in Halcyon’s laboratory.

If forensic testing identified the formula, the evidence would connect him directly to the collapse.

Emily stepped in front of the cabinet.

Pierce raised the cast saw.

Before he could move, Aaron entered the room and drove him against the wall.

Police officers followed.

Pierce dropped the saw.

Lily remained beneath the table, trembling but unharmed.

Aaron knelt several feet away.

“I am sorry I left.”

Lily looked at him.

“Did you find your little boy?”

Aaron nodded.

The question broke his composure.

Pierce was restrained, but he began laughing.

“You’re celebrating too early. Claire has Sarah’s original custody file.”

Sarah’s face changed.

The file did not only contain Lily’s false guardianship.

It named another man as Lily’s legal father.

Not David.
