The underground corridor contained thousands of sealed boxes.

David’s voice echoed ahead.
“You promised the Riverton files would disappear.”

“I promised to protect Lily.”
“You helped me move the fragment.”
“To keep you from killing Sarah before I found Anna’s evidence.”
“You needed me.”
“I needed time.”
David understood he had become expendable.
He drew a handgun from beneath his coat.

Marcus remained behind the tactical line with Sarah.
The officers ordered David to put the weapon down.
He dragged Claire toward a row of shelves and demanded the birth certificate.
“If Lily is Daniel’s child, the Voss trust belongs to her.”
Sarah stared.
The Voss family held a private trust worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Daniel’s only child was the primary surviving heir.
Claire’s custody battle was not simply emotional or protective.

“You watched him hurt Lily,” Sarah said.
Claire looked toward her.
“I did not know about the fractures.”
“You knew about the tracker.”
“Yes.”
“You knew he told her I was dead.”
“Yes.”
“Then stop calling yourself her protector.”
The words landed harder than the weapons pointed across the room.
David fired toward the ceiling.
Dust and paper fell.
Officers moved closer.
Claire threw the birth certificate toward Sarah.
David lunged after it.
Aaron, who had accompanied the security team after reuniting with Noah, tackled him from the side.
The weapon slid beneath a shelf.
David struck Aaron and tried to reach it.
Nora’s officers surrounded him.
No final arrest was resolved; attorneys and jurisdictional disputes still loomed, but David no longer controlled the room.
Claire backed toward another archive door.
Marcus blocked her.

“You do not understand what public exposure will do.”
“Then transfer them to independent child advocates.”

“So you appointed yourself permanent owner of everyone’s identity?”
Claire’s confidence broke for the first time.
She had begun by hiding threatened families.

Sarah recovered Lily’s birth certificate.
The document named Daniel Voss as father.
A sealed amendment beneath it named an emergency co-guardian.

Marcus stared at his own name.
He had never met Daniel.

“Why?”

Marcus felt the weight of a decision made by dead people without his knowledge.
The guardianship amendment could give him temporary legal authority over Lily if Sarah were declared incapacitated.

Even after Pierce’s confession, the order remained active in the sealed system.

A new emergency petition appeared.

Sarah looked at the screen in horror.
“I did not file that.”

Someone had captured it while she was restrained at Grayhaven.
The filing transferred emergency authority to the next person listed in Daniel’s amendment.
Caroline Hale.
Marcus turned toward his mother.
Caroline stood at the archive entrance holding Anna’s laptop.
