Chapter 7 - GrayhavenGrayhaven Rehabilitation Center stood beyond a flooded service road at the edge of the county.

Its main building had once treated injured factory workers and children recovering from orthopedic surgery. After multiple licensing violations, it closed publicly and transferred its patients elsewhere.

Yet electricity still flowed through the eastern wing.

Police vehicles stopped beyond the locked gates. Tactical officers entered first while Marcus remained with the medical team.

Rainwater poured from broken gutters.

The exterior cameras turned toward the officers as they approached.

Someone was still controlling the building.

The front lobby appeared abandoned. Dust covered the reception desk. Wheelchairs stood in a row beneath faded paintings of smiling children.

A fresh footprint marked the floor.

Nora’s team followed it toward the old hydrotherapy wing.

The “rain room” was a therapy chamber designed to spray warm water over patients while they exercised beneath support harnesses.

Its windows had been sealed with concrete.

The red industrial pipe from Sarah’s video ran across the ceiling.

The room was empty.

Restraint straps hung from three chairs.

A child’s shoe lay beneath one.

Marcus recognized the smell of fresh fiberglass.

Behind the therapy chamber was an illegal casting room.

Pink fiberglass rolls filled a cabinet. Medical charts listed children under false names. Several had fractures that never received proper treatment.

Dr. Julian Pierce had used casts for more than immobilizing injuries.

He hid trackers, medication packets, documents, and stolen objects inside them.

Children could be moved through hospitals, shelters, and transportation checkpoints while carrying evidence no one expected doctors to inspect.

A wall map showed routes across five states.

Lily was one of at least nine children.

Marcus found her file.

LILY CROSS—COMPLIANCE LEVEL UNSTABLE. MATERNAL CONTACT RESTRICTED.

The original name, Bennett, had been covered with correction tape.

Sarah’s file was stored beneath it.

She had worked as a Grayhaven accountant under the false name Mary Bell for six years after disappearing from Riverton. David kept her there because she knew the counterfeit supply chain and could identify every payment.

She eventually gained access to the children’s records.

She began helping families recover identities.

That was why David moved her.

A speaker activated above the casting table.

Claire Voss’s voice filled the room.

“You arrived faster than expected, Dr. Hale.”

Nora signaled officers to search for the control center.

Marcus looked toward the camera.

“Where is Sarah?”

“Alive for the moment.”

“And the children?”

“Safer than they were with the families who sold them.”

The statement carried the confidence of someone who believed control could be renamed protection.

Claire claimed Grayhaven had begun as a witness-relocation system for injured workers and abused children. Courts were compromised. Corporations owned the clinics. False identities kept vulnerable people hidden.

Then David and Dr. Pierce turned the system into a trafficking route for evidence, money, and corporate leverage.

“Why did you help David escape?” Nora asked.

“Because he knows where Sarah moved the original Riverton files.”

“You kidnapped children to recover documents.”

“I preserved children whose guardians would have killed them.”

“And kept them under false names.”

“Some identities are dangerous.”

Marcus thought of Lily believing her mother had drowned.

“Children are not containers for your secrets.”

Claire ignored him.

A locked door opened at the end of the hall.

Inside sat two children from Lily’s drawing, both alive, frightened, and wearing orthopedic braces.

Sarah was not with them.

One child handed Marcus a note.

SHE TOOK THE TRAIN BELOW THE WATER.

Grayhaven’s original plans showed no railway.

But an older industrial map revealed a maintenance tunnel connecting the rehabilitation center to the abandoned Riverton Steel property.

The tunnel entrance lay beneath the flooded hydrotherapy pool.

Then the building alarms activated.

Water began rising through the lower corridors.
