Chapter 16 - THE GIRL WHO CALLED HIM DADMarcus did not answer the teenager.

Behind him, Sarah ran toward Lily’s wheelchair, but Nora caught her arm before she crossed the threshold.

The forgotten pediatric ward contained too many unknown doors, cameras, and medical lines. Catherine Hale’s hand remained on the wheelchair handle.

Lily looked at Sarah.

“Mommy?”

Sarah broke free only after Catherine released the chair.

She dropped to her knees and wrapped both arms around her daughter carefully, avoiding the healing legs. Lily touched Sarah’s face as though confirming that skin could not be another video.

“You’re really here.”

“I’m here.”

Catherine did not attempt to separate them.

“I never intended to keep Lily,” she said.

“You used a forged order to take her through a wall,” Nora replied.

“I removed her before Claire’s remaining officers arrived.”

“You struck Nurse Carter.”

“No.”

Catherine glanced toward a masked orderly standing beside the rear door.

The orderly ran.

Two officers pursued him while Catherine activated a panel beneath her administrator badge. Fire doors descended between sections of the ward.

Marcus remained separated from the teenager.

She wore a brace extending from her left hip to her ankle. The device was old, repaired with mismatched straps, and marked with the name EMILY WARD.

“Who told you I was your father?” Marcus asked.

Emily looked toward Catherine before answering.

“My mother.”

“Who is your mother?”

“Elena Ward.”

The name struck him harder than the cast saw’s impact.

Elena had been a physical-therapy resident at the hospital where Marcus completed his orthopedic training. They dated for nine months. After accepting a research position connected to Halcyon, Elena sent him an email saying she had miscarried and wanted no further contact.

Marcus never knew she had been pregnant until that message.

He had grieved a child he believed had never been born.

Catherine entered a code.

The steel door behind Emily began opening.

“Do not take her,” Marcus said.

Catherine’s expression sharpened.

“You have not seen her for fifteen years.”

“I am not claiming custody. I am asking you not to remove her during an active investigation.”

“You already speak like a father who thinks restraint makes ownership sound reasonable.”

Emily stared between them.

“Did you know about me?”

“No.”

Catherine laughed softly.

“That is what men say when records become inconvenient.”

Marcus did not look away from Emily.

“I knew Elena. I received a message saying the pregnancy ended. I do not know whether the message was hers.”

“It wasn’t,” Emily whispered.

Catherine tightened her grip on Emily’s chair.

“Enough.”

Nora raised her voice from the other side of the fire door.

“Catherine Hale, the ward is surrounded. Release the girl and surrender your access card.”

“She is not a girl you discovered tonight. She is a patient I kept alive after Halcyon ordered her termination.”

“Then let an independent physician examine her.”

“Independent physicians built Grayhaven.”

Catherine pulled Emily through the rear doorway.

Emily reached toward Marcus.

Not enough to escape the chair.

Enough to show she did not want the door closing.

Marcus struck the manual release.

Nothing happened.

Caroline stepped beside him.

“Catherine!”

Her twin stopped.

For a moment, the identical women faced each other through narrowing steel.

Caroline said, “You told me Elena’s baby died.”

Catherine’s voice became quiet.

“I told you what kept Marcus outside the network.”

“You used my name.”

“I used the identity Halcyon trusted.”

“You let Anna believe she was speaking to me.”

“Anna knew eventually.”

“Before or after you left her inside Section 17?”

Catherine flinched.

The door closed.

A service elevator carried her and Emily beneath the ward before officers could restore access.

Lily remained with Sarah.

The captured orderly was identified as a Halcyon medical contractor who admitted striking Emily Carter and delivering the forged child-services order. He did not know Catherine’s destination.

Inside the abandoned ward, investigators collected Emily Ward’s medication bottles, hair from the brace straps, and a blood sample preserved under the false name.

Marcus gave DNA only after receiving independent counsel.

He did not want fear to transform a laboratory result into instant parenthood.

The result arrived before dawn.

Probability of biological paternity:

99.9987 percent.

Marcus sat alone when Nora showed him.

“What happens now?” he asked.

“We find her.”

“And after that?”

“After that, she is fifteen. She has a mother, a history, and an opinion. Biology gives us information. It does not decide the relationship for her.”

Marcus nodded.

That was the first answer anyone had given him that did not turn Emily into property.

Then another test appeared.

Emily’s orthopedic brace contained a telemetry unit transmitting muscle and nerve responses to a live Halcyon facility.

The facility was registered under the name White Ward Rehabilitation.

Primary patient:

ELENA WARD—ACTIVE.

Emily’s mother had not died.
