Chapter 10 - Anna’s PasswordThe foundation ladder descended into black water.
Marcus, Sarah, Nora, and two rescue officers entered wearing emergency harnesses. The chamber lay forty-two feet east of the main support column, exactly where the fragment code indicated.
A rusted access panel blocked the passage.
The electronic lock still had power.
It requested a medical provider number.
Marcus entered his own.
The door opened.
Anna had registered the vault under his credentials months before he began residency.
“How?” Marcus whispered.
Sarah answered.
“She knew Halcyon was monitoring every engineer and auditor. Medical-provider accounts received less scrutiny because the company operated employee clinics.”
Anna borrowed Marcus’s early training credentials without telling him. She used them to store copies of safety reports inside a supposedly confidential rehabilitation archive.
That choice could have endangered his career.
It also preserved evidence Halcyon failed to find.
Inside the vault stood sealed containers protected above the flood line.
Nora photographed everything before opening the first.
Anna’s laptop lay inside.
Beside it were counterfeit bolt samples, inspection recordings, payroll ledgers, and photographs of children undergoing treatment at Grayhaven.
The child-identity operation began earlier than anyone realized.
Halcyon used Grayhaven to isolate workers’ children after fatal accidents. Families received settlements only if they surrendered legal claims. Children who witnessed unsafe conditions or parental coercion were given new medical diagnoses and moved.
The network began as corporate damage control.
Claire later claimed she transformed it into protection.
But the original files showed she designed the legal framework.
Sarah inserted Anna’s laptop battery and connected an isolated reader.
A final video played.
Anna appeared inside Section 17 hours before the collapse.
“Marcus, I used your credentials because you are the only person in this family who believes records should describe what happened rather than what powerful people need remembered.”
Marcus looked down.
Anna continued.
“If something happens to me, Caroline will find the apartment copy. Sarah knows the shipment codes. Do not let them turn the surviving children into evidence storage.”
She had anticipated the exact method David later used on Lily.
The video showed Claire entering the inspection office.
Anna confronted her about counterfeit components and Grayhaven transfers.
Claire answered:
“If this becomes public tonight, Halcyon closes every protected residence. Children disappear back into the homes we removed them from.”
“You cannot hide industrial murder to preserve your private system,” Anna said.
“I can until I separate the cases.”
“You have been saying that for three years.”
Claire ordered Anna to remain in Section 17 while she contacted federal investigators.
Then David entered after Claire left.
The video ended before the collapse.
Claire had placed Anna in danger.
David turned that danger into murder.
The distinction mattered legally.
It did not absolve Claire morally.
A second file contained the names of nine children.
Lily Bennett.
Noah Cross.
Emily Ward.
Six others listed under false identities.
One name startled Marcus.
AARON BROOKS JR.
Aaron, the clinic security officer, had told Marcus he had no children.
Nora called the clinic.
Aaron did not answer.
Emily reported that he had left his post ten minutes earlier after receiving an emergency message.
Lily remained protected with two police officers.
But the hospital’s internal tracker showed her examination room door had opened using Aaron’s master code.
