When Sarah discovered she was pregnant, Daniel demanded that she enter Grayhaven protection and stop cooperating with outside investigators.
She refused.
Months later, Daniel died in what authorities called an accidental apartment fire.
Sarah always suspected Claire arranged it.

Claire helped David escape because he possessed the original custody file proving Daniel’s relationship to Sarah.
She did not want David convicted before she recovered it.
Nora obtained an archived copy of the file.
It named Daniel Voss as father and Claire Voss as emergency guardian if both parents died or became incapacitated.
Sarah was alive.
But Grayhaven records declared her mentally incompetent six years earlier.
The order had never been formally reversed.
Claire could petition for Lily’s custody using the old findings.
“This was never only about evidence,” Sarah said. “She wants Lily.”
Marcus looked through the glass toward Exam Room 4.
Lily sat beside Aaron’s rescued son, Noah. The two children compared hospital stickers without speaking much.
Both had lived beneath false names.
Both had been told someone they loved was dead.
Nora requested emergency protection orders for Sarah and Lily.
Before the judge could review them, the courthouse server displayed an existing sealed case.
Claire had filed for guardianship that morning.
The petition claimed Sarah abducted Lily from Grayhaven treatment, exposed her to physical danger, and manipulated her into hiding industrial debris inside a medical cast.
Claire used the truth about the fragment but reversed responsibility.
She portrayed Sarah as the person who endangered the child.
The petition included photographs of Sarah near the casting room.
It omitted David holding Lily down.
An emergency hearing was scheduled for midnight.
Judge Russell Vane—the man who signed David’s temporary guardianship—would preside.
Russell was Claire’s father.
Nora immediately challenged the conflict.
The court clerk claimed no other judge was available because of storm closures.
The Voss family controlled the legal doorway exactly as Halcyon controlled the medical one.
Marcus prepared a detailed statement about the cast removal, Lily’s reactions, David’s attempted seizure, and the evidence chain.
Emily completed the medical report.
The forensic lab sent preliminary findings.
The stain on the plastic included Lily’s blood, Sarah’s fingerprints, Pierce’s DNA, and residue from a proprietary Halcyon chemical.
The physical evidence contradicted Claire’s petition.
Then the hospital received another video.
Claire sat inside an office with David beside her.
He was no longer restrained.
Between them lay Lily’s original birth certificate and a handwritten confession signed by Sarah.
Sarah stared at the screen.
“I never wrote that.”
Claire spoke calmly.
“Withdraw the Riverton evidence and acknowledge that Lily belongs with the Voss family. In return, David tells police he acted alone.”
David smiled.
He believed the family would sacrifice him only on paper.
Marcus studied the office background.
A marble wall, federal seal, and dark wooden bench appeared behind Claire.
She was already inside Judge Vane’s private courtroom.
The hearing was not waiting until midnight.
