Chapter 8 - Beneath the Rain RoomThe officers evacuated the two children while the water rose.

Marcus helped fit one child with a temporary brace after discovering an untreated ankle injury. The second refused to speak but clutched a laminated card bearing the name Noah Bell.

Nora found no birth record matching it.

The emergency pumps had been disabled manually.

A tactical team reached the hydrotherapy pool and opened the maintenance hatch beneath the filtration platform. Cold water poured into a concrete stairwell descending toward the old industrial tunnel.

The tunnel remained passable only because a raised rail platform ran above the flood channel.

Fresh wheel marks crossed the mud.

Sarah had likely been transported on a medical cart.

Marcus accompanied the team as medical support.

The air smelled of rust, oil, and stagnant water. Old pipes carried the vibration of the storm.

Halfway through the tunnel, they found Dr. Julian Pierce.

He lay beside the rail platform with an injured shoulder. His silver glasses were broken.

Nora secured him while Marcus assessed the injury.

“David did this?” Marcus asked.

Pierce laughed through the pain.

“David does everything when he thinks the evidence is slipping away.”

“Where is Sarah?”

“Riverton.”

“Where exactly?”

Pierce looked toward Marcus.

“Where your sister died.”

He admitted applying Lily’s replacement cast under David’s orders. He claimed he did not know the metal would injure her.

“You built a medical prison around a child’s legs,” Marcus said.

“I was told the tracker was necessary.”

“And the fragment?”

“I never saw it clearly.”

“You heard Lily crying.”

Pierce looked away.

Marcus tightened the temporary sling around his shoulder more sharply than necessary, then stopped himself.

He would not let anger turn treatment into punishment.

Nora questioned Pierce about the children.

Grayhaven had housed minors connected to corporate witnesses. Some parents voluntarily entered protection. Others lost custody through forged medical reports and emergency orders.

Claire Voss managed the legal identities.

David controlled transportation.

Pierce altered medical records to prevent outside doctors from discovering repeated injuries.

Sarah secretly collected proof.

“She was going to expose everyone,” Pierce said.

“Why didn’t she escape?”

“Because David threatened Lily.”

Pierce explained that Sarah placed her daughter with a trusted family under another name after Riverton. David found Lily three years later, killed the foster arrangement through a fraudulent custody petition, and forced Sarah back into the network.

“Did he kill the foster parents?” Nora asked.

Pierce remained silent.

The tunnel ended beneath Section 17 of Riverton Steel.

The structure above had never been rebuilt. Twisted beams rose beneath the storm like black ribs.

Fresh tire tracks led toward the old inspection office.

Inside, Sarah sat strapped to a chair beside a portable heater.

She was alive.

David stood behind her holding a flare gun toward a stack of chemical drums.

Claire Voss watched from an upper walkway.

Marcus saw three separate threats at once.

David controlled the immediate violence.

Claire controlled the exits.

Sarah’s chair had been positioned beside the surviving east-support foundation where Anna died.

David smiled at Marcus.

“Your sister left something under the concrete. Sarah is going to tell us where.”

Sarah looked at Marcus.

“Do not believe Claire. She did not protect Anna’s evidence.”

Claire’s expression changed.

Sarah continued.

“She ordered David to keep Anna inside Section 17.”

The accusation shifted the entire room.

David had approved counterfeit bolts.

But Claire may have chosen who died when they failed.

👉 Marcus found Sarah alive at Riverton, only to learn that Claire—not David—may have ordered Anna kept inside the collapsing structure.
