Chapter 18 - THE MOTHER WHO WAS NOT DEADThe missing officer was found inside an ambulance bay.
He had been sedated, not killed.
Elena’s file was gone.
A camera showed a paramedic carrying it toward a vehicle whose license plate belonged to a children’s hospice closed six years earlier.
Nora did not declare Catherine truthful merely because one warning proved accurate.
She divided the operation.
One team protected Elena.
Another pursued the stolen file.
A third approached Catherine’s location without using personnel named in Anna’s archive.
Marcus remained at White Ward.
Elena asked him to stay.
They spoke through the eye-tracking system for nearly an hour.
Emily’s birth had been difficult. Elena developed an infection. Catherine said the infant required emergency transfer.
Three days later, Elena was shown a document claiming Marcus had refused paternity.
His signature looked real.
Marcus remembered signing a hospital insurance form during residency. The same signature had been copied onto the surrender.
“Did you believe it?”
I DID NOT WANT TO.
Catherine then showed her a photograph of Marcus entering an awards dinner with another physician.
The image had been taken months later.
Elena was told he had moved on.
“You were still alive. Why didn’t you contact me when your strength returned?”
Elena’s eyes hardened.
I TRIED.
Letters disappeared.
Calls reached Grayhaven operators.
One attempted escape ended with Elena’s medical records declaring her suicidal. She was moved to White Ward and placed on increasing muscle suppressants.
Catherine visited monthly.
“She imprisoned you.”
Elena selected:
SHE ALSO STOPPED HALDEN FROM MOVING EMILY.
The contradiction remained.
Catherine had protected Emily from one man by making herself the only person allowed to control the child.
Elena did not call that motherhood.
She did not call it simple kidnapping either.
At the secondary hospital, Catherine released three patients before police entered. She remained with Emily inside a therapy room surrounded by mechanical braces.
Nora spoke through the door.
“Emily is not under arrest. She may leave.”
Catherine answered, “She has never lived outside protected medicine.”
“Then support can continue without you controlling her identity.”
“You think ordinary foster care will understand what Halcyon did to her nervous system?”
“Independent specialists are waiting.”
“Specialists trained on Halcyon equipment.”
Emily’s voice entered the conversation.
“Can I talk to Marcus?”
Catherine became silent.
Nora arranged a private line while Catherine remained several feet away.
Marcus appeared from Elena’s room.
Emily stared at him.
“Is she there?”
“Yes.”
“Does she remember me?”
“She asked to see you.”
“Does she still call me Emily?”
“Yes.”
Catherine had warned the girl that Elena might use another name because illness confused her.
Marcus continued:
“You do not have to leave with me. You do not have to call me Dad. You may speak with an advocate who works for neither Catherine nor Halcyon.”
Emily looked toward the locked door.
“What happens to Catherine?”
“That depends on evidence and courts.”
“She raised me.”
“I know.”
“She lied.”
“Yes.”
“If I leave, am I betraying her?”
“No child owes captivity to the adult who provided care.”
Catherine’s face changed beyond the camera frame.
Emily stood slowly with the brace.
She unlocked the therapy-room door from inside.
Catherine did not stop her.
Police entered without drawing weapons toward the teenager.
Catherine surrendered her badge.
“Do not place her in a standard hospital bed,” she said. “Her left hip will dislocate.”
The medical team verified the warning and adjusted the stretcher.
Even during arrest, Catherine knew Emily’s body better than Marcus did.
That fact hurt him.
It also belonged to Emily’s history.
Mother and daughter met under medical supervision.
Elena could not embrace Emily with both arms, so Emily placed her hand beneath Elena’s fingers.
“You knew where I was?” Emily asked.
YES.
“Why didn’t you come?”
I COULD NOT.
“Catherine said you stopped trying.”
SHE LIED.
Emily began crying.
Then defended Catherine.
“She made sure I had books. She stayed during surgeries.”
Elena’s screen produced:
BOTH TRUE.
The two words prevented the room from demanding one clean mother and one clean villain.
Hours later, the stolen file was recovered from the hospice van.
The driver was Halcyon founder Graham Halden’s former chief of security.
Inside the file, investigators found the order continuing Elena’s medication.
Authorizing physician:
MARCUS HALE.
Marcus had never treated Elena.
