The bracelet had not been destined for some criminal fence.
Bethany had an appointment scheduled the following Monday with a jewelry buyer.
The company bought gold and estate jewelry.
Her email contained photographs.
Mom’s bracelet among them.

That changed everything.
Bethany had not merely found the bracelet on the carpet.
She had photographed it before the party.

Mom had loaned Bethany several pieces three weeks earlier while choosing jewelry for a charity dinner.

Bethany returned the jewelry box.
Apparently not everything inside.
Why wear the bracelet at the birthday if Bethany already had it?
Because Mom had retrieved it from Bethany two days before the party after realizing it was missing.
