Chapter 18 - The main truth
Bethany did not go into the birthday intending to hurt Rosie.
She went in intending to take the bracelet.
She had debt she had hidden from Daniel.
A jewelry buyer appointment scheduled.
She believed she could sell the bracelet, cover several urgent payments, then replace it before Mom noticed.
A fantasy.
Rosie saw her.
Bethany panicked.
She took Rosie into the bathroom because she wanted to control what the child would say.
The silicone cups began as a cruel improvisation.
Bethany called it a game.
Every time Rosie repeated:
“You stole Grandma’s bracelet,”
Bethany pressed another cup onto her arm.
She wanted Rosie to associate repeating the accusation with discomfort.
When Rosie tried to leave and threatened to tell me, Bethany slapped her.
One slap.
Then fear.
Then concealment.
She left Rosie hiding behind the toilet because returning to the party and acting normal seemed easier than admitting what she had done.
The grandparents had not planned it.
Daniel had not known.
Dad’s glass was a separate act of rage after he saw me hit Bethany.
Mom’s attempt to pull me back came from her instinct to keep the family confrontation inside the house.
Different choices.
One family pattern beneath them:
Protect the adult creating the crisis.
