My mother owned dozens of pieces of jewelry.
Most had modest value.
The missing bracelet was different.
Gold.
Small diamonds.
Given to her by my father for their fortieth wedding anniversary.
Insurance appraisal:
About $4,800.
Sentimental value much higher.
Mom had worn it when the party began.
Photographs proved that.
At some point after cake, it disappeared.
Mom had not noticed.
Bethany denied taking it.
Police did not find it in her purse.
That weakened Rosie’s account temporarily.
Then Daniel spoke again.
“Check our car.”
Bethany’s car was in my parents’ driveway.
Investigators obtained permission.
The bracelet was beneath the passenger seat inside a folded napkin.
Bethany’s explanation:
She found it on the floor and intended to return it.
