Chapter 21 - Grandma Evelyn
My mother lost the relationship she assumed biology guaranteed.
At first she blamed me.
Then the courts.
Then Daniel.
Then Bethany’s lawyer.
Eventually she ran out of external targets.
Nine months after the party, she wrote me:
I kept thinking if I could get everyone to calm down, the family could survive the day. I understand now that I was asking you to calm down while holding a hurt child because I was more frightened of losing the family structure than of what had happened inside it.
That was the first useful thing she said.
Then:
When your father threw the glass, I still wanted you to come back inside. I am ashamed of that.
I did not immediately forgive her.
