Chapter 6 - Rosie’s interview
Rosie spoke to a trained forensic interviewer two days later.
I watched none of it live.
I was not allowed in the room.
Good.
The interviewer began with things Rosie liked.
Dinosaurs.
Purple pancakes.
Her preschool teacher.
Then moved gradually toward the birthday.
Rosie said she had been looking for her cousin Mason’s missing toy dinosaur when she saw Bethany near the hallway closet.
Bethany had something shiny in her hand.
Rosie asked:
“What’s that?”
Bethany told her:
“Nothing.”
Rosie followed her.
That was how she ended up near the guest bedroom.
Then she saw Bethany put a bracelet into her handbag.
Rosie recognized it.
Grandma Evelyn’s bracelet.
Not because the jewelry was famous.
Because Evelyn wore it to nearly every family event.
Rosie said:
“That’s Grandma’s.”
Bethany answered:
“You didn’t see anything.”
Rosie said:
May you like
“I’m telling Dad.”
That changed the afternoon.
