Chapter 17 - My mother’s pattern

Mom had protected Bethany since childhood.
I was four years older.
If I broke a lamp:
Adrian should have been careful.
If Bethany broke one:
She was upset.
If I forgot homework:
Consequences.
If Bethany forgot:
She had anxiety.
When Bethany was nineteen, she ran up $3,000 on Mom’s card.
My parents called it:
“A misunderstanding.”
At twenty-six, Bethany borrowed rent money and spent part on a weekend trip.
Dad covered it.
At thirty-three, she secretly opened a store account using Mom’s address.
Mom paid the balance before Daniel found out.
Every incident was treated as unique.
