Chapter 24 - My father apologizes

Dad’s apology came almost two years later.

No therapist-written poetry.

He said:

“I saw you hit Bethany and I stopped seeing Rosie.”

I waited.

He continued:

“She was in your arms. I knew it. But for that second, you were the son who hit my daughter.”

“Bethany is my sister.”

“I know.”

“And Rosie?”

“Was my granddaughter.”

“Was?”

He corrected himself.

“Is.”

I said nothing.

Dad looked down.

“I threw the glass because I wanted to hurt you.”

There.

Not the wall.

Not an accident.

Me.

“I did not want to hit Rosie.”

“That doesn’t matter as much as you think.”

“I know.”

That was as far as we got.

It was enough for that day.
