Chapter 19 - Rosie’s birthday memory
The party had not even been Rosie’s birthday.
That became strangely important to her.
Months later she asked:
“Was Mason’s birthday ruined because of me?”
“No.”
“But everyone stopped eating cake.”
“That was because adults made bad choices.”
“I told on Aunt Bethany.”
“Yes.”
“Then you punched.”
“Yes.”
“Then Grandpa threw.”
“Yes.”
“So I started it.”
“No.”
She stared.
I said:
“Imagine you smell smoke and pull the fire alarm. Did you start the fire?”
“No.”
“You told what happened. That is not the same as causing what adults did afterward.”
She thought about that for a long time.
Then:
“Did Mason still get presents?”
“Yes.”
