Chapter 16 - Daniel’s failure
Daniel separated from Bethany after the party.
That did not make him innocent of everything.
He knew she had hidden debt.
He knew she had borrowed repeatedly from my parents.
He knew she sometimes screamed at Mason.
He knew she had once grabbed their son hard enough to leave finger marks.
He told himself:
Stress.
Bad night.
Not a pattern.
He never saw her use the silicone cups on a child.
Never knew about “truth circles.”
But he had normalized enough smaller behavior that he stopped reacting quickly.
When investigators asked why he left his phone recording after presents, Daniel said:
“I forgot.”
True.
Then he added:
“I’m glad I did.”
So was I.
