Chapter 10 - The Story David NeededWhile Sarah underwent surgery, Detective Morales interviewed David at the house.
He was not yet handcuffed.
The detective wanted him talking.
David sat in the living room with his tie removed and sleeves rolled up.
He looked like a tired professional enduring an unfortunate misunderstanding.
Margaret sat nearby with an attorney already on speakerphone.
David repeated the same story.
Sarah had become irrational over an investment she forgot approving.
She had thrown her phone.
She had struck him.
She had slipped on an orange.
He had tried to catch her.
Detective Morales placed a still image from the evidence phone on the coffee table.
It showed David gripping Sarah’s blouse.
His hands were visible.
Her body was pressed against the island.
Margaret looked away.
David’s expression barely changed.
“A single image lacks context.”
The detective placed another image beside it.
David pushing Sarah.
Then another.
Margaret watching with the wineglass raised.
Then another.
Emma running toward the emergency phone while David lunged after her.
“The recording has audio,” Morales said.
David swallowed.
“My attorney will challenge it.”
“Challenge whatever you like.”
She leaned forward.
“But explain why you tried to create a false version before police arrived.”
“I was in shock.”
“Your mother was remarkably organized for someone in shock.”
Margaret stood.
“This interview is over.”
Detective Morales did not stop her.
Instead, she looked at David.
“Why did you need Sarah to say she slipped?”
David stared at the floor.
Because an accidental fall would not necessarily remove him from the inheritance structure.
A documented domestic assault would.
If Sarah died during treatment, David needed the home recording to support his innocence.
If she survived, he needed her frightened enough to repeat his story.
He had planned for both possibilities.
But he had not planned for Emma.
Detective Morales slid a final photograph forward.
The emergency phone.
“Your daughter knew exactly what to do.”
David’s face tightened.
