Chapter 5 - Before the SirensDavid paced between the kitchen island and the doorway.

His hands shook.
“We need to think.”
Margaret stared at him.
“You need to remove that recording.”
“It’s uploading.”
“Then stop the internet.”
David rushed to the cabinet containing the router controls.
Sarah’s father spoke through the emergency phone.
“The evidence phone has cellular backup.”
David stopped.
Robert Bennett’s voice remained calm.
That calm terrified him.
Sarah knew her father’s quiet tone. He used it during billion-dollar negotiations and family emergencies.
It meant every unnecessary emotion had already been replaced by action.
Margaret crouched beside Sarah.
“Tell your father you fell.”
Sarah looked at the broken wineglass near Margaret’s knees.
“You watched him break my leg.”
“I watched you provoke your husband.”
Emma cried harder.
Margaret turned toward the child.
“Stop making that noise.”
Sarah’s hand closed around a fallen orange.
“Do not speak to her.”
Margaret looked startled.
Sarah could barely move, yet something in her voice made the older woman step back.
David looked through the front window.
A distant siren entered the quiet street.
He loosened his tie as though the fabric were choking him.
“Sarah, listen to me. We can fix this.”
“You stole from me.”
“It was temporary.”
“You forged my approval.”
His eyes flicked toward Margaret.
That glance told Sarah more than his answer could have.
Margaret knew.
Perhaps she had helped.
The sirens grew louder.
David grabbed Sarah’s smartphone from beneath the island.
The screen had cracked but remained active.
He stared at the bank alert.
Then he looked toward the kitchen sink.
Sarah understood.
He wanted to destroy the device before police saw it.
She forced herself onto one elbow.
“The bank has copies.”
David’s face twisted.
“You think your father can save you from everything?”
Robert answered through the speaker.
“No, David. But I can make sure she never needs saving from you again.”
Red and blue light flashed faintly across the white cabinets.

The police had reached the house.
👉 Officers were seconds away, but Margaret still held one secret that could turn Sarah from victim into suspect.
