Chapter 17 - The Emergency Custody OrderDavid’s attorney filed the custody petition from the police station.

The document claimed Sarah was hospitalized after a mental-health crisis.

It stated Emma had witnessed dangerous behavior from her mother.

It requested that David’s sister collect the child immediately.

The petition relied on Dr. Reeves’s false records and photographs staged inside the house.

Sarah’s legal team learned of the filing minutes before a temporary judge reviewed it.

Robert entered Sarah’s hospital room carrying a laptop.

“They are trying to take Emma now.”

Sarah’s face went cold.

“Where is she?”

“With me.”

“Do not let her leave this floor.”

Robert opened the secure court link.

Sarah’s attorney appeared on-screen from Columbus County Court.

The emergency hearing began within fifteen minutes.

David participated from a private room at the police station.

He wore a borrowed jacket and spoke with carefully controlled sadness.

“My wife needs help,” he said. “I love her, but our daughter cannot remain exposed to instability.”

Sarah watched him perform concern while her leg remained elevated beneath surgical supports.

Her attorney submitted the evidence-phone recording.

The judge listened to David threaten Sarah.

He heard the impact against the island.

Emma’s scream.

Margaret’s accusation.

Sarah’s two-finger signal.

The emergency call.

David’s attempt to create a false story.

Then Detective Morales testified that forged medical records and financial fraud were under investigation.

David’s attorney objected repeatedly.

The judge overruled him.

Sarah was asked one question.

“Mrs. Bennett, do you believe your husband poses a danger to your daughter?”

Sarah looked directly at the camera.

“Yes.”

David’s expression changed.

For years, Sarah had softened every truth to protect his reputation.

Not now.

The judge denied David’s petition.

A temporary protection order granted Sarah sole custody and prohibited David, Margaret, and their relatives from contacting Emma.

David’s microphone remained active when he whispered to his attorney.

“She cannot do this to me.”

Sarah heard him.
