On the large screen, Sarah stood beside the marble island holding her smartphone.
David appeared calm.
Margaret sipped wine.
Emma watched from the hallway.
Then Sarah said, “Put my inheritance back.”
David’s face changed.
The jury saw him slap the phone away.
Grab Sarah’s blouse.
Drive her into the island.
Shove her.
They heard the crack.
Emma’s scream.
Margaret’s voice.
“Now look what you made him do.”
One juror covered her mouth.
David stared at the table.
The recording continued.
He grabbed Sarah’s wrist and ordered her to say she slipped.
Sarah raised two fingers.
Emma ran.
David lunged after her and fell against the island.
The little girl pressed the button.
Her sobbing voice filled the courtroom.
“Grandpa, Mom looks like she’s going to die!”
Then Robert’s answer.
“Stay on the line, Emma. I’m bringing the police.”
David’s face on the courtroom screen collapsed in terror.
The video ended.
No one moved.
David’s attorney argued that the incident was a momentary loss of control unrelated to the financial case.
Prosecutors responded with the incapacity amendment, sedatives, false medical records, emergency custody petition, Westerville house, life insurance, and David’s failed attempt to disable the phone.
The kitchen attack did not stand alone.
It activated the plan.
Sarah testified the following day.
David’s attorney asked why she stayed after installing the emergency phone.
“Because leaving an abusive marriage is dangerous.”
“Did you manipulate Emma into fearing her father?”
“No.”
“Then why teach a four-year-old secret hand signals?”
Sarah looked toward the jury.
“Because I knew there might be a moment when I could not speak.”
David lowered his head.
That moment had arrived.
