Chapter 24 - Emma’s Recorded TruthProsecutors did not want Emma testifying in open court unless absolutely necessary.
Instead, a child-forensic specialist interviewed her in a comfortable room filled with toys.
Sarah watched through secure video from another room.
Emma held the stuffed rabbit from the hospital.
The specialist asked simple questions.
“What happened in the kitchen?”
“Mommy showed Daddy the phone.”
“What did Daddy do?”
“He hit it.”
“And then?”
“He grabbed Mommy’s green shirt.”
Emma demonstrated with the rabbit.
“He pushed her on the white table.”
“The island?”
Emma nodded.
“Then Mommy fell and screamed.”
“What did Grandma do?”
“She drank the red juice.”
“Did she help Mommy?”
Emma shook her head.
“She said Mommy made Daddy do it.”
Sarah covered her mouth.
The specialist continued gently.
“What did Mommy do next?”
Emma raised two fingers.
“That means red button.”
“Who taught you?”
“Mommy.”
“Why?”
“Because Daddy gets scary.”
Sarah closed her eyes.
Emma had understood more than Sarah realized.
Children did not need adult language to recognize danger.
They noticed footsteps.
Voices.
Doors.
The way a mother became quiet when a father entered.
The interview ended after twenty minutes.
Emma returned to Sarah and asked for crackers.
To her, the truth was not complicated.
Daddy pushed Mommy.
Grandma watched.
Mommy signaled.
Emma called Grandpa.
Adults had created thousands of pages attempting to obscure what a four-year-old explained in four sentences.
The recording would be admissible without forcing Emma into the same room as David.
Sarah felt relief.
Then the prosecutor showed her a motion filed by David’s attorney.
They wanted to challenge Emma’s memory by claiming Sarah trained her to accuse him.
Sarah’s hands tightened.
“They want to put her on trial.”
The prosecutor shook his head.
