Chapter 6 - Margaret’s VersionThe first knock shook the front door.
“Columbus Police!”
Emma remained beside the emergency phone.
David looked toward the hallway.
Margaret grabbed his arm.
“Do not open it yet.”
A second knock followed.
“Open the door!”
Margaret moved quickly now.
She picked up Sarah’s cracked smartphone and wiped its surface with the sleeve of her burgundy dress.
Then she placed it near Sarah’s hand.
Sarah watched in disbelief.
“What are you doing?”
Margaret kicked one of the oranges toward David’s shoe.
“She attacked you with the phone. You defended yourself. She slipped.”
David stared at his mother.
“You said she only fell.”
“The story must explain the recording.”
Sarah almost laughed despite the pain.
Margaret had believed herself clever enough to rewrite reality while the evidence phone was still recording.
Robert heard her through the speaker.
“So that’s your story, Margaret?”
The older woman froze.
She had forgotten the call remained connected.
The front door opened.
Officer voices filled the hallway.
David stepped backward.
Margaret straightened her pearls and lifted her chin.
Two officers entered the kitchen with their hands near their holsters.
Behind them came a female detective in a dark jacket.
Her eyes moved across the scene.
Sarah on the floor.
The twisted leg.
Emma beside the phone.
David near the island.
Margaret beside shattered glass.
Oranges everywhere.
The detective looked at David.
“Step away from her.”
David raised both hands.
“This was an accident.”
The detective’s gaze shifted toward the evidence phone.
Its upload light blinked.
Then she looked at the emergency phone.
“Who is on the line?”
Robert answered.
“Sarah’s father. I heard the assault and the attempt to construct a false account afterward.”
Margaret’s face lost its composure.
David whispered, “Mom.”
The detective pointed toward the hallway.
“Both of you, move away from Sarah and the child.”
Sarah finally allowed herself to breathe.
But when the detective asked where the inheritance money had gone, Margaret smiled again.
