Chapter 9 - The Hospital QuestionAt the hospital, doctors confirmed Sarah’s right tibia was fractured in two places.
Surgery would be required.
Her hip was badly bruised, and her wrist showed marks from David’s grip.
A nurse photographed every injury with Sarah’s consent.
Emma sat beside the bed in a borrowed children’s sweatshirt, clutching a stuffed rabbit a police officer had found in the emergency room.
Robert arrived shortly after noon.
He was sixty-two, silver-haired, and usually impossible to read.
When he saw Sarah’s leg suspended beneath medical supports, his face cracked.
He kissed her forehead.
“I should have come sooner.”
“You came when Emma called.”
He crouched beside his granddaughter.
Emma wrapped both arms around his neck.
“Daddy hurt Mommy.”
Robert closed his eyes.
“I know.”
Sarah watched him carefully.
“What did you know before today?”
He looked toward the hospital door.
Detective Morales had arrived and stood outside speaking with a financial-crimes investigator.
Robert lowered his voice.
“I knew money was moving strangely through David’s company.”
“How long?”
“Three months.”
Sarah felt a second kind of pain.
“You didn’t tell me.”
“I wanted proof before frightening you.”
“You should have warned me.”
“Yes.”
He did not defend himself.
That made it harder to remain angry.
Robert placed a folder beside her bed.
“David created companies in your name. He borrowed against future distributions from your trust.”
“How much?”
“We do not know yet.”
Sarah looked at Emma.
The child was drawing circles on the rabbit’s ear with one finger.
“Did he touch her money?”
Robert hesitated.
That hesitation answered the question.
Sarah’s stomach tightened.
Emma had received an education trust from Sarah’s mother.
David had repeatedly claimed he could not access it.
“What did he do?”
“He submitted documents naming himself as emergency trustee.”
Sarah stared at her father.
David had not merely stolen Sarah’s inheritance.
