Chapter 4 - The Hidden Evidence PhoneDavid crossed the kitchen in three long steps.

Emma wrapped both arms around the emergency phone.
“Give me that,” he ordered.
She screamed and turned her body away.
Before he could reach her, Sarah grabbed his trouser cuff from the floor.
The movement sent agony through her leg, but she held on.
David kicked free.
His shoe struck the cabinet beside her head.
Sarah flinched.
The phone speaker remained active.
Her father heard everything.
“David,” the voice said.
David stared at the device.
“Robert, this is a misunderstanding.”
“You will move away from Emma.”
Margaret recovered first.
She stepped over the broken wineglass and reached for the phone cord.
Sarah shouted, “Don’t touch it!”
Margaret looked down at her with contempt.
“You have caused enough trouble.”
She bent toward the device.
A second sound entered the kitchen.
A faint electronic chime from beneath the wooden side table.
David turned.
Sarah’s hidden evidence phone had begun uploading automatically.
Its camera had faced the kitchen since Margaret arrived.
Its microphone had recorded the bank confrontation, David’s attack, the false story, and every word spoken afterward.
David noticed the lens.
His face changed.
He rushed toward it.
Emma moved in front of the side table, spreading her small arms.
“No!”
David stopped inches from his daughter.
For one terrible moment, Sarah saw the rage in his face searching for somewhere to go.
Then her father spoke again.
“David, the police have your address. The recording is already leaving the house.”
David looked toward the windows.
The American flag outside shifted gently in the daylight.
The suburban street appeared peaceful.
No sirens yet.
No officers.
Only the knowledge that they were coming.
Margaret seized David’s sleeve.
“Destroy the phone.”
Sarah met his eyes from the floor.
“If you touch it, they’ll know.”
David’s confidence collapsed into panic.
He had spent years controlling what happened inside the house.
