Chapter 2 - Learn Your PlaceDavid moved before Sarah could step back.
He slapped the smartphone from her hand.
The device struck the hardwood floor and slid beneath the edge of the marble island.
Emma screamed.
Sarah reached for the counter, but David grabbed the front of her emerald satin blouse and pulled her toward him.
His face twisted with rage.
“You live in my house. Learn your place.”
The smell of coffee and mint toothpaste filled Sarah’s senses as he snarled inches from her face.
She pushed against his chest.
“Let go of me.”
David drove her backward into the island.
Pain exploded across her lower back.
A brown grocery bag toppled from the counter. Oranges rolled across the floor, striking cabinet doors and chair legs.
Margaret did not move to help.
She calmly raised her wineglass again.
Sarah looked toward Emma.
The little girl stood frozen in the doorway, her mouth open, tears already pouring down her face.
“Go upstairs,” Sarah gasped.
David followed her gaze.
“No one is going anywhere.”
He shoved Sarah with both hands.
Her heel caught beneath her.
She fell sideways.
Her right leg folded beneath her body with a dry, sharp crack.
For half a second, Sarah felt nothing.
Then pain tore through her so violently that the kitchen disappeared behind white light.
She screamed.
Emma’s scream joined hers.
David stood over Sarah with his fists clenched.
His chest rose and fell rapidly.
Margaret stepped around the island, careful not to let her burgundy dress touch the spilled groceries.
She looked down at Sarah’s twisted leg.
Then she smiled.
“Now look what you made him do.”
Sarah clawed at the floor, struggling to remain conscious.
Her smartphone lay several feet away.
But another phone—small, black, and hidden beneath the wooden side table—was still exactly where she had placed it three weeks earlier.
Beside it sat the emergency phone with the oversized red button.
Emma knew what that button meant.
