Chapter 23 - Sarah Goes HomeSarah returned home six days after surgery.

She used crutches while Robert carried her bag.
Emma entered first, holding her grandfather’s hand.
The kitchen had been cleaned.
The shattered wineglass was gone.
The oranges were gone.
The grocery bag had been removed.
But evidence markers remained near the island and wooden table.
Sarah stopped in the doorway.
Her body remembered before her mind did.
The marble edge.
David’s hands.
The floor rushing upward.
Emma’s scream.
She could not breathe.
Emma looked up.
“Mommy?”
Sarah tightened her grip on the crutches.
“I’m okay.”
She was not.
But she entered anyway.
The emergency phone remained on the wooden table.
Its red button looked enormous in the quiet room.
Emma walked toward it.
“Grandpa answered.”
“Yes, he did.”
“I did the two fingers.”
“You did exactly right.”
Emma stared at the floor where Sarah had fallen.
“Will Daddy come back?”
“No.”
“Grandma?”
“No.”
Emma considered this.
“Are they bad?”
Sarah lowered herself carefully into a chair.
She did not want to teach her daughter that people were divided simply into monsters and heroes.
But she would not hide the truth.
“They made dangerous choices. We stay away from people who hurt us.”
Emma climbed into her lap carefully, avoiding the injured leg.
Sarah held her.
Robert stood near the window, pretending to examine the American flag outside.
The hidden evidence phone had been taken by police.
The house felt strangely exposed without it.
Yet also lighter.
David’s clothes were gone.
Margaret’s wineglass no longer waited in the cabinet.
Sarah looked around the kitchen.
For years, David called it his house.
But his name had never appeared on the deed.
The first legal notice arrived that afternoon.
Sarah’s attorney had changed every lock, revoked David’s access, and frozen all joint accounts.

The house responded to Sarah again.
👉 Sarah reclaimed the home, but the courtroom would force Emma to face the father who still insisted she remembered everything wrong.
