The emergency contact listed Margaret.
Sarah’s name appeared nowhere.
Another bedroom contained medical equipment, blackout curtains, and a lock installed on the outside of the door.
Detective Morales showed Sarah photographs carefully.
Robert stood beside the hospital bed, his face rigid.
Sarah stared at the locked room.
“Was that for me?”
“We believe so.”
The house had been rented four months earlier.
Long before Sarah discovered the missing money.
David’s plan was larger than temporary incapacity.
He intended to remove Sarah from public life entirely.
The false medical records could justify private treatment.
Dr. Reeves had prepared a referral to an unlicensed “wellness specialist” who operated from private residences.
Sarah would be kept medicated.

Sarah felt the walls of the hospital room close around her.
Robert took the photographs away.
“You do not have to see more.”
“Yes, I do.”
She made herself look again.
A lock outside the bedroom.
A child’s drawings already placed on the refrigerator.

Sarah had been cropped out.
Emma entered the room holding her stuffed rabbit.
Sarah closed the laptop immediately.
“Mommy, are you sad?”
Sarah opened her arms.
Emma climbed carefully beside her.
“No,” Sarah said, holding her daughter against her chest. “I’m here.”
The little girl rested her head beneath Sarah’s chin.
That simple weight reminded Sarah what David had failed to understand.
