Chapter 13 - The Tea Margaret MadeThe toxicology report returned that evening.

Sarah’s blood contained traces of the sedative.

Not enough to place her in immediate danger.

Enough to confirm repeated exposure.

The medication had a short half-life, which meant Sarah had received it recently.

She remembered the tea Margaret prepared the night before the confrontation.

Chamomile.

Honey.

A faint bitterness Sarah had blamed on lemon peel.

Margaret sat with her while she drank it and asked questions about the inheritance account.

“What happens if you’re hospitalized?”

“Can Robert still control the trust?”

“Does David receive anything automatically?”

Sarah had answered because Margaret disguised every question as concern.

Detective Morales recorded the details.

“Did she prepare food for Emma?”

“No.”

“Did David?”

“No.”

That mattered.

The sedative appeared targeted only at Sarah.

Robert stood near the window, staring toward the hospital parking lot.

“I invited that woman into our family.”

Sarah watched him.

“You warned me about David.”

“I warned you he was ambitious. I did not understand he was dangerous.”

Neither had Sarah.

David’s cruelty had arrived in pieces small enough to explain away.

A missing password.

A broken cabinet.

A hand around her wrist.

A financial decision made without her.

Margaret calling her ungrateful.

David apologizing just enough.

Each incident isolated from the others looked survivable.

Together they formed a structure.

The detective received a call and stepped into the hallway.

When she returned, her expression had changed.

“Margaret’s attorney says the medication was accidentally mixed into the tea.”

Sarah stared at her.

“How?”

“She claims she stored pills beside sweetener packets.”

Robert gave a humorless laugh.

“No jury will believe that.”

“Perhaps not.”

Morales placed a document on the bed.

“But Margaret also claims Sarah requested medication because she was emotionally unstable.”

The statement was signed by a physician.

Sarah recognized the name.

Dr. Allan Reeves.

David’s longtime friend.

A man who had never examined her.

Yet he had written that Sarah suffered from severe anxiety, memory disturbance, and paranoid financial behavior.

David had begun manufacturing medical evidence before the injury.

👉 A doctor had helped build the lie that Sarah was unstable, and his records could place the conspiracy inside the hospital itself.
