Recovery would take months.
Emma was sleeping curled in a chair near the window.
Robert looked toward the little girl.
“When did you teach her the signal?”
“Three weeks ago.”
“What happened three weeks ago?”
Sarah hesitated.
She had not told anyone.
Not even her father.
David had arrived home after midnight, angry about a transfer the bank had delayed.
He had punched the pantry door beside Sarah’s head.
The wood had cracked.
Emma had been standing at the top of the stairs.
David saw her and immediately changed.
He smiled.
He told Emma Daddy had slipped.
The next morning, Sarah installed the emergency phone.
It connected directly to Robert, then automatically opened a second line to emergency dispatch if the red button remained pressed for three seconds.
Sarah had also hidden the evidence phone beneath the side table.
“I thought I was being dramatic,” she whispered.
Robert shook his head.
“You were being careful.”
“I stayed.”
“You were trying to protect Emma.”
“I should have left.”
“You are leaving now.”
Sarah looked toward her daughter.
“David will fight for custody.”
“He will try.”
“Margaret will help him.”
“She already is.”
Robert opened the folder from the financial investigator.
Margaret had used her tablet to approve two of the shell-company transactions.
Her device had supplied the pressure pattern recorded during Sarah’s supposed signature.
The voice sample captured during authorization belonged to David.
The biometric trap had worked.
But one detail remained unexplained.
A transfer request scheduled for the following week.
It moved the remaining inheritance into a holding company that activated only if Sarah became medically incapacitated.
David had expected her to become unable to manage her affairs.
Perhaps he had planned more than a kitchen assault.
Sarah looked at the cast on her leg.
“He didn’t lose control.”
Robert met her eyes.
“No.”
“He needed me injured.”
The realization settled over the hospital room.
David had not pushed her because he became angry.
