Chapter 29 - Margaret Names Her SonMargaret entered the courtroom wearing a plain gray dress without pearls.

She looked smaller.
Her testimony lasted four hours.
She admitted giving Sarah sedatives.
She admitted helping forge signatures.
She admitted contacting Dr. Reeves.
She admitted preparing the Westerville house.
Then the prosecutor asked about the morning of the assault.
“Did David know Sarah had discovered the transfer?”
“Yes.”
“What did he tell you before she entered the kitchen?”
Margaret stared toward her son.
David did not look at her.
“He said she needed to be injured badly enough to require hospitalization.”
A sound moved through the courtroom.
“What was your role?”
“To support his account that she had become unstable.”
“Did you expect him to break her leg?”
Margaret’s voice shook.
“He said he would make sure she could not leave.”
David’s attorney stood.
“Mrs. Bennett received a cooperation agreement.”
Margaret looked toward the jury.
“I am testifying to save myself. That does not make it false.”
The prosecutor displayed a message David sent Margaret forty minutes before the confrontation.
Once she is down, take the phone and make sure Emma stays quiet.
Sarah closed her eyes.
David had planned for her daughter too.
Margaret continued.
When Sarah raised two fingers, Margaret did not understand the signal.
David did.
He had tested the emergency phone the previous night.
That was why he moved immediately.
The plan failed because the phone’s backup connection remained active.
The prosecutor asked the final question.
“Who designed the conspiracy?”
Margaret looked directly at David.
“My son.”
David’s face hardened with hatred.
Margaret began crying.
Not the controlled tears of the interview room.
These were raw, frightened sobs from a mother finally seeing the man she had protected.
The jury received the case the next morning.
Sarah waited at home with Emma and Robert.
Hours passed.
Then the prosecutor called.
May you like
A verdict had been reached.
👉 The jury returned faster than anyone expected, but Sarah still feared the system might believe David’s polished mask over her broken body.
